Le nombre total des générations est donc : depuis Abraham jusqu’à David, quatorze générations ; depuis David jusqu’à l’exil à Babylone, quatorze générations ; depuis l’exil à Babylone jusqu’au Christ, quatorze générations.
RÉFLEXION
Généalogie de Jésus Christ fils de David …
Pourquoi Matthieu a-t-il voulu détailler ainsi la généalogie de Jésus-Christ ? C’est la question que je me suis posée à chaque fois qu’il m’a été donné de la lire, aujourd’hui encore ! Cette généalogie çi révèle Son appartenance à Joseph, l’époux de Sa mère Marie. Or nous savons bien que Joseph et Marie n’ont pas conçu Jésus dans la chair ! Que Jésus fut conçu en Marie par l’intervention du Saint-Esprit.
« Sois sans crainte, Marie, car tu as trouvé grâce auprès de Dieu. Voici que tu vas concevoir et enfanter un fils ; tu lui donneras le nom de Jésus [….] Marie dit à l’ange : « Comment cela va-t-il se faire puisque je ne connais pas d’homme ? » L’ange lui répondit : «L’Esprit Saint viendra sur toi, et la puissance du Très-Haut te prendra sous son ombre ; c’est pourquoi celui qui va naître sera saint, il sera appelé Fils de Dieu. » (Luc 1: 30,35)
Nous comprenons donc que Joseph, dont la généalogie paraît ici en cet Évangile de Matthieu, n’a aucun lien de ‘parenté ‘ avec Jésus, sauf par La Volonté de Dieu : « Joseph, fils de David, ne crains pas de prendre chez toi Marie, ton épouse, puisque l’enfant qui est engendré en elle vient de l’Esprit Saint ; elle enfantera un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de Jésus (c’est-à-dire : Le-Seigneur-sauve), car c’est lui qui sauvera son peuple de ses péchés. » (Matthieu 1:20-21) Et nous comprenons que c’est par Marie que Jésus possède Son appartenance humaine ! Qu’Il n’est pas le fils de David ! Que Joseph est Son ‘père nourricier’, qui l’a élevé avec Marie.
Pourquoi Matthieu a cru bon détailler la généalogie de Joseph alors que celle de Marie, qui somme toute est plus importante, est inexistante dans Le Livre des Saintes Écritures ? Et en quoi les réponses à ce mystère de l’Incarnation de Jésus apporteront plus de poids à ma foi?
Pas plus tard qu’avant hier, à Maurice je disais que je ne ressentais pas le besoin, ni ne voyait l’importance de faire analyser mon ADN, puisque je sais d’où je viens et où je repars. Dieu est mon Père et Il me suffit !
Que dis-Tu Ô Saint-Esprit ?
Et Le Saint-Esprit répondit par cette Parole de Jésus Lui-même à Ses premiers disciples :
«Mon Père m’a tout donné, et personne ne connaît le Fils, si ce n’est le Père; personne non plus ne connaît le Père, si ce n’est le Fils et celui à qui le Fils veut le révéler.» (Matthieu 11:27)
Puis Il ajouta encore ceci :
«Voici ce que dit l’Éternel: Maudit soit l’homme qui fait confiance à ce qui est humain, qui prend des créatures pour appui et qui détourne son cœur de l’Éternel ! Il est pareil à un genévrier dans la plaine: il ne voit rien venir de bon, il habite les endroits brûlés du désert, une terre salée et sans habitants.
Béni soit l’homme qui fait confiance à l’Éternel et qui place son espérance en lui ! Il ressemble à un arbre planté près de l’eau et qui étend ses racines vers le cours d’eau: il ne s’aperçoit pas de la venue de la chaleur et son feuillage reste vert. Lors d’une année de sécheresse, il ne redoute rien et il ne cesse pas de porter du fruit.
Le cœur est tortueux plus que tout, et il est incurable. Qui peut le connaître ? Moi, l’Éternel, j’explore le cœur, j’examine les reins pour traiter chacun conformément à sa conduite, au fruit de ses agissements.» (Jérémie 17:5-10)
Amen ☦️ Merci Ô Saint-Esprit pour ces explications et ces précisions ! Elles viennent raffermir ma foi et confirmer ma voie. Merci à Matthieu pour son partage détaillé de la généalogie de Jésus-Christ mon Maître, Sauveur, Seigneur et Époux. Il m’a permis d’arriver à cette évidence et cette conclusion : Je suis de Dieu ~ L’Éternel ! Tout le reste n’est que passager car mortel.
Et Le Saint-Esprit conclua en disant :
« Effata ! », c’est-à-dire : « Ouvre-toi ! » (Marc 7:34) Que ta langue se délie ! Car « Il n’y a rien de caché qui ne doive être découvert, ni de secret qui ne doive être connu ». (Luc 12:2) N’oublies pas : “Maintenant, il faut dire …” Et si cela peut aider qui que ce soit en quoique ce soit, qu’il se souvienne de cette parole de Job : « Nu je suis sorti du ventre de ma mère, nu j’y retournerai. Le Seigneur a donné, le Seigneur a repris : Que le nom du Seigneur soit béni ! » (Job 1:21)

REFLECTION
The genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David
Why did Matthew feel the need to detail Jesus Christ’s genealogy in this way? That is the question I ask myself every time I read it, even today! This genealogy reveals His belonging to Joseph, the husband of His mother Mary. But we know well that Joseph and Mary did not conceive Jesus in the flesh! Jesus was conceived in Mary by the intervention of the Holy Spirit :
“Do not be afraid, Mary, because you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son; you will name Him Jesus […]” Mary said to the angel: “How will this be, since I do not know a man?” The angel replied to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the one to be born will be holy, and will be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:30,35)
We therefore understand that Joseph, whose genealogy appears here in Matthew’s Gospel, has no blood nor familial connection with Jesus, except by the Will of God: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit; she will give birth to a son, and you will name Him Jesus (which means: The Lord saves), because He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20-21) And we understand that it is through Mary that Jesus has His human belonging! That He is not the Son of David ! That Joseph is His ‘foster father,’ who raised Him with Mary.
Why did Matthew think it necessary to detail Joseph’s genealogy when Mary’s, which is ultimately more important, is absent from the Holy Scriptures? And how will the answers to this mystery of the Incarnation of Jesus add more weight to my faith?
Not long ago, the day before yesterday, I said to Maurice that I did not feel the need, nor saw the importance, of having my DNA analyzed, since I know where I come from and where I am going. God is my Father, and that is enough for me!
What do You say, O Holy Spirit?
And the Holy Spirit responded with this Word of Jesus Himself to His first disciples:
“My Father has given everything to Me, and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.” (Matthew 11:27)
Then He added:
“Thus says the Lord: Cursed is the man who trusts in man, who makes flesh his strength, and whose heart turns away from the Lord! For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when good comes; but shall dwell in the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land that is not inhabited. Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is in Him! For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease to bear fruit.”
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.” (Jeremiah 17:5-10)
Amen ☦️ Thank you, O Holy Spirit, for these explanations and details! They strengthen my faith and confirm my way. Thank you, Matthew, for your detailed sharing of Jesus Christ’s genealogy, my Master, Savior, Lord, and Bridegroom. It has led me to this realization and conclusion: I am of God — The Lord! Everything else is fleeting, mortal.
And the Holy Spirit concluded by saying:
“Ephatha!” which means: “Be opened!” (Mark 7:34) Open your mouth! Remember : “Now its time to say it all” — For “There is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known.” (Luke 12:2) And if this declaration of Job (1:21) can help whoever for whatever, so be it : «Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return : the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.»
